imperialism, oil, again
when i was a kid and the argentinians undertook an ill-fated invasion of the falkland islands, for me, with my welsh republican/nationalist upbringing it was 'obvious' that this was not about some sheep farmers on a rock in the south atlantic.
it was 1) a pre-election land of hope and glory-boost for thatcher, 2) a re-instating of oil and mineral rights around the 'malvinas' islands.
we've had a few governments since then, and there's some long term strategic policy planning going on, but how long does an establishment wait before implementing what the falklands war was really about?
oil me up, baby
