(edit: made some progress...)

threw a 2nd hd in my box, trying to get the bastard to show up. finally get it in bios, it's even in device manager.. "this device is working properly"

however, there's no drive letter, and it won't let me put one in..

my boot disc is C. i have a cd and a dvd on D and E.. i took out the cd and the dvd moved to drive D instead of E, but it still won't accept any designation for the 2nd hd, so i guess it's not # of drives...

what gives ??? :p

you gotta create at least one partiton first in FDISK before you can allocate a drive letter

control panel > administrative tools > computer management

then disk management, then choose the disk and partition it there.

nope - get a boot disk for 98

if you odnt have one check the site PC WARE SECTION - PC TIPS & TRICKS

look for BOOT DISK - there's a link to a site with ALL the boot disks

get the one for 98

unzip it to a floppy (virus free of course)

boot the pc off of the floppy

Then you can use FDISK

do you know how to use FDISK to partition a drive?

If you're installing a second drive in your '98 box you'll probably have fdisk on your OS drive already.

open a dos prompt. Type fdisk. The options are fairly intuitive. just MAKE SURE YOU SWITCH TO YOUR NEW DRIVE BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!!!! You could really fuck things up if not. Then you want to create a new primary partition. You may have to create more than one depending on the size of your drive.

ja.. trying to avoid backing up ~1 year of unfinished songs.. all acoustic modeled jazz.. ie. minute, tiny tiny tiny drive-you-crazy sequencing..

just hppening to drop by, you're prolly gone for the day.. craig.. any pointers on 'making sure i've switched drives' ? surely a cd\ won't work until it's recognised..

hokay.. i got a bit brave..

1) create dos partition or logical dos drive

or

2) set active partition??

(or doubtful 5) change current fixed disk drive

never had a use for partitions, so never done it. i wouldn't be asking but i checked some 'installing a new hd' tutorials and they're all like 'pop the drive in, you're good to go' stuff.

something kinda eerie about having two computers running in the same room... (might be megalomania)

first, change current drive. you know the different sizes, right? It should show up as "2" or...

then, create partition (primary)

if youre going to create a second partition, youll have to make the first active I believe.

SORRY - YES CHOOSE 5 first

MAKE SURE YOU ARE WORKING ON THE UNFORMATTED/UNPARTITIONED DRIVE - OTHERWISE YOU MIGHT BE WORKING ON THE FIRST DRIVE YOU ALREADY INSTALLED

Like I said ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You will lose everything if you fuck with the partitions. Choose "5" to switch to your new disk. Then "1". It's been a long time since I did any of this

:O

had trouble finding info on my h/d since the part # was listed as the model # (what the fucking dif is..)

Thank you for contacting Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.

The hard drive that you have is a Deskstar 7K250 40 gig hard dive. Here is
a link to our website and information about that series of drives:

http://www.hgst.com/hdd/desk/7k250.html

The information you wanted is: cylinders - 16,383, sectors - 63, and heads
- 16. Keep in mind that these settings in your bios will only come up to
8.4 gig. Depending on how old your system is, you may need either a bios
upgrade or a translation software to get the full capacity of your hard
drive.

translation s/w? my system's less than 2 years old.. surely it should be up to date for a frigging hard drive??

yeah, partitioning is just a way to define the boundaries for formatting. sorta like placing start and end points on a loop.

so you have to do a main partition as a basis, and then you can divide it up if you want after that
