Please excude my ignorance here, but is it possible to transfer data from a desktop to a laptop (and vice-versa) via USB?
I am looking to replace my desktop with a laptop and have files on the desktop to move to the lappy. Unfortunately I do not have a cd writer on the desktop and would like to avoid having to buy one for a single session of archiving.
The desktop is running win98SE and the lappy will be win XP.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks.

I've seen cable transfer over a serial port in the older versions of Windows, but I thought that transferring data over a USB cable wasn't possible until I saw this.....

Seems like it's basically a USB network cable, and should do the trick for you. Cheap enough as well though if you shop around you might find it cheaper somewhere else.

winxp still does direct cable connection over serial or parallel ports, but i would imagine it's painfully slow for file transfers. never used it myself tho... that usb thing sounds neat!

assuming the laptop has a lan input get yourself a network card for the desktop. much cheaper and faster than the usb thing.
