The differnces between 1 and 2 aren't that great. You get 4 more voices on the 2, and filter saturation. You also get a sine osc type, and more LFO and mod envelope destinations. Also 2 more outputs (one per part).
The NL3 is a totally different beast. It's an analog implementation of an FM synth, basically. It includes seperate sync oscillators per main osc, I believe a sub-osc, effects, and those trippy lighted knobs. It doesn't sound all that much like the NL1/2.

PS - I've seen NL2 racks for $899. That's not expensive. The only shit that's crazy priced is the stuff you can't get from any ofther synth - the Modular and the NL3.
