Was listening to Steve Lamaq on radio one for a change. They were talking about the current guitar band scene and discussing how it's an interesting time for guitar bands. Kinda like the late 80's cause all the labels (major and minor)A&R people are sitting in the front two rows at all these small gigs. Basically trying to find the next "Strokes" or "White Strips".

Apparently major labels are going back to the old school. Basically, trying to find bands and nuture them into the next "U2" or "REM". There's this band in Denmark (can't remember the name) and they were totally unknown out of their country. Even in their country they only played gigs and didn't ever record/release anything. Anyway, word spread and they've just been signed for a 7 figure sum.

The circle turns and now the labels are heavily into signing guitar bands. Its cool watching bands (I'm not a regular guitar gig attender) like Ash and The White Stripes though, cos there is always this strange kinda sexual tension going on between the male lead singers and the female guitarist/drummer. Its like go and rent a bloody room!

i thought they were married?... (stripes) - anyways a "7 figure sum" doesnt mean much... nuff artists get xx million launches and flop still.

the problem I see it is they are trying to create an alternative to the genuine youth market which they dont want to touch or want to back away from a bit, ('urban' music).. but in rock there isnt really any new style to cash in on like there was in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's & 90's... it's all been done already - how much 'harder' can band go?... not much... so what's the alternative?.. songs are scarce on the ground I heard.. plenty of bands, no decent writers tho so they say... So you got thrashy stuff, sorta 'grunge leftovers' but where the old grunge guys were drawing on older music for their influence and thus propelled quality songs by taking that influence and dirtying it up, the new bands i dont think have any much musical history to draw from so their songs are a bit like badly rehashed simple chords. it's sort of lost it's spark so they are going for novelty records almost right now until a new genre appears to bandwaggon onto I guess...

i think mebbe a classic rock sound will make a comeback soon... a move away from this endless 'thrash with melody' clones, back to a little 'guitar heroism' a bit, and more musician-y bands mebbe??...

Britian has DEFINATELY lost out totaly in rock now tho.

radiohead's next album better be another "bends" or they're going to be in the same underground boat as all us other synthers.

wouldn't it be a perfect time for another rock radiohead album? THAT's classic rock IMO.

OH jesus if Radiohead made another bends or pablo honey, I'd puke and cry myself to sleep. Even THEY admit they hate both of those albums... There fanbase would die down QUICK.

Oh, and god praise MBV Loveless.

you think, espoo?

Funny how all my "radio-headed" friends want another Bends. At least an ok computer. They're all rockers, though. I could go either way. But if you're talkin about saving rock, another rock Radiohead album would do the cause well, no? regardless of whether you liked the bends or not.

I love Radiohead's actual music but that Tom bloke's (lead singer) voice is bloody awful. I'm all for a pained expression in vocals but his singing is just plain rubbish.

screw rock.
If you can't make something good out of it, I don't want you to emulate someone who "saved" it, therefore killing it again with imitators.

RHead might as well be electronic now anyway...
Kid A is as classic as it gets.

And those trucker hats make me sick. They sell them at urban outfitters for 30 bucks.

Argh.

WEH-HEY!!... got my drummer yesterday!... and fuck me can he play!!!... he plays real jazzy and fluid & Mitch Mitchell-y/Moon-y too, sorta Dave Grolsh crossed with Keith Moon - but best of all he can actualy lay down a groove which alot of dynamic drummers cant do! ... heh, at one point he was going off on this really fast funky jazzy thing at double time and it started to become drum & bass even! - Anyways, it'll be worth coming to see live that's for sure, we sounded fucking great even without a bass!

and then that GOD DAMN MAKE THE CAMERA SHAKE SO THE SONG SOUNDS HARDER filming technique for videos?!?!?!

and..Incubus? sorry, but they lost their balls the minute they signed past S.C.I.E.N.C.E. which was a BEAUTIFUL effort

yeah. before they were HedPE...they did an indy release called Church of Realities

this was at their heyday here in OC...I used to see them play pretty much weekly, and as far as a perfect blend of aggression and funk..they had no rivals

then they got signed to JIVE...did the self titled album...and...it was pretty fuckin good still..somehow lost the energy from the indy release (the tracks that were on "HedPE" didnt seem to explode the way they did on "Church")

I lost track after that...started hearing them on KROQ and it just was...gone. SO sad

their MC was one of the best Ive ever heard

if you get a chance..listen to IFO on church of realities. Its on HED too, but...just not the same.

their drummer...TIGHT AS FUCK, too. really a damn good outfit all around

i dunno... thats the thing though. Just because an artist start "commericialising" they turn bad? I mean, it doesn't really matter to me if they changed their look or sound. Its if I like this new look or sound.

Like i said before, i know they've changed but I still like incubus. Just in a different way than before.

well thats fine for you, man! Im not trying to convince you otherwise

but yes...if they change their look or sound they are sellouts, no fucking two ways about it

changing your sound...well..thats one thing...people do evolve and develop new tastes and influences, I mean shiiit..>BEATLES?

but...aww come on man...are you going to start defending the music industry and the snatchemupchewmgoodtiltheflavorsgonethenspitemoutandforgetem way that it ALWAYS works?

PLEASE dont. I beg of you!

well... some people do run out of "flare"... it seems that if you want to survive in the business - you have to adapt and "sellout". Some people will remain fans no matter how you change and some will bash you for selling out. I can't really defend those who do but its really their decision. Its either stay in or be slowly kicked out. They want to appeal to the masses because they need to or soon they won't survive in the business. They will lose to the 500 other ppl who sellout. I guess I don't really support the idea of doing so - if they can they should remain the way they are. But its really like a survival of the fittest thing here.

only because a certain group created it that way, AND bands go along with it

takes both sides for it to work

thing is...incubus was DAMN GOOD before all this, and SCIENCE sold pretty fuckin well, with no compromise whatsoever

it comes down to people just wanting way too fucking much, and then letting someone sell them this 'dream' where they can HAVE IT, but it rarely works out anyway

its like the people here in SoCal...someone recently said to me "well, you cant comfortably live unless you make $80k a year"

?!?!?!?!?!

unless you get over the idea that you NEED all these fucking expensive things.

and thats what happens with bands. Instead of spending the money on a good record, and selling it and doing ok, they fall for the gluttony that is the modern world, and suddenly a $300k advance just doesnt look good enough anymore

as for the sellout thing aww who the fuck knows, ya know? Maybe incubus wanted to change. Im not bashing them cuz i have no idea. I just cant stand what theyre doing now. I can say that I see right through it, and at the center theres one thing lacking: the soul that was integral to the music on science and that crazy fungus album...

Yeah, i guess it could be a money thing. The difference from now and then? Well you say soul - i say they lost their funk touch and added much loungeyness (if that is a word). I've never heard their fungus lp. I don't see it around here.

Thats kinda another example. I guess if you go mainstream and follow the masses, your music circulates better. For example, I can find Make Yourself so easily but I can't find the fungus lp anywhere. Thats just another downside to the music business. The sellouts get alotta play but the nonsellouts are ignored and hard to find.

Madonna would have to come close. She's changed her look and sound a million times, but she's still "Madonna." And while she may be a pop whore, she alwyas was a pop whore so at least she's true to her image. I think most people would agree that she's done great things for pop music, whether they like her songs or not.

well, I think there's a difference in an audience coming around to an artist's thing -- them becoming popular organically -- versus a band forming or changing to leech off a fad (i.e. creed clones, people who "go country" during peaks of popularity, etc). there's also the ones who remake themselves occasionally when they've perhaps taken a particular sound as far as they can without repeating themselves, y'know an update or a makeover, versus people who let the label mooks mold their image so that the marketing departments can "get behind it". sometimes what an artist's fans want is not experimentation or growth, but repetition of that thing that first caught their attention.

I ate my hate over Madonna. Never liked the early stuff but loved pepole who did. One of them I had appologise to when (what is album before Ray of light) - that and ROL blew me away. I know its very much the partners making the tune (If William Orbit is here - you rock my world) but that could be a fair model - working with others, being able to be interesting (or rich) enough to stimulate other great people

U2 seem able to sound new and they do well live

ROL was great. I still have it sitting around here somewhere. Didn't know Orbit did it though. Guess I should dig deeper.

Yeah, ROL is undeniably good. You may not like the music, but I've never heard anyone knock the production level or taste. You can't.

And even though the tracks are all Orbit, you also can't deny that they have a Madonna vibe. That is, even though she changed style she remained true to herself as far as singing and songwriting. I'm not a huge fan of Madonna's catalog, but I give her my utmost respect for being who she is and no one else.

Ozric Tentacles, too. They don't even fuck with the sound for 20+ years. :}

after her single populariased that clipped-edit guitar riff (where you edit off the last bit of the phrase to leave a gap) thing, it's appearing on lots of tracks.

you know now that you mention it k, I don't know if you listen to commercial hiphop nowadays, but they've gone back to that one-shot sample sound, playing it on a scale (not really paying attention to time stretching, ol skool style). Which is kinda how that Madonna track sounded with its stutter style. I remember a couple of my hiphoppin' buddies being excited about that track and I didn't really get why they liked Madonna all of a sudden. Seems her influence may have spread even there... the timing's about right.

That shit's all over the place now (boy, boy, boy, boy, oh-oh-oh-oh- boy! Hate that shit actually, really annoying. Kinda like Fatboy slim   )

ah, that was that other guy... whats his name... mirwais! thats it!

i read an interview with him once regarding that track. allegedly, his engineer likes to fuck around with strings of sysex and make samplers do weird things. then of course they chuck it into protools (as if you couldnt guess  )

yeah but i dont think that's how they did it with her track, i think they just edited a guitar track with butt cuts - i like that one shot style tho it's nice, like the old mirage days etc heh heh.

It's good for a couple measures if you change it up then, but it's the entire basis of too many tracks on the radio nowadays. Ick.
