RE: Phatten up the kick drum?
no dont rely on the mastering phase, cos that can only effect the entire bottom end.... use combinations of compression and eq to phatten up the kik.... try rolling off a hard shelving eq on the bottom end at around 40-60hz.... see how it effects the sound... raise the shalving eq frequency until you hear it cutting (or boosting) the kik bottom end, then roll it back off a few hz below this audible setting... that'll keep the bottom-end tidy and clean up any flabby low-end mess...... then find the sweet spot's of the kik frequencie/s above this and boost thos a tad or cut some frequencies to emphasise the remaining ones you DO want to emphasise... then use some compression to adjust the amount of 'thump'... slow attack, fast release... mess with the ratio & attack to taste... use an peak (or rms) comp over a soft-knee if possible.
