Subject: how to set definable knobs?

I'm confused as to how to properly set the defineable knobs.
I don't know when to set them in global or single mode.
Who's got precedance when?
Which better and why?

I think in multi-mode the assignable knobs take their functionality from whataver channel you currently selected (in the upper left corner). I don't think there is a "global" definable.. I almost never use those knobs so I really don't know for sure..
