on the compression effect of the a3000 the threshold goes from -33db to -6db. Can anyone explain how this fits with usual compression where db's are written as positive values.

no thats the 'threshold' mate not compression ratio, it is expressed like that, the lower it is the earlier the comp kick's in cos generaly you want the comp to cut in prior to 0db especially with digital where 0db is overload, remember this is an internal effect so it's processing entirely in the digital domain where above 0db means nasty digital clipping - you should master digital idealy at around -10/12db peak.

on analog rack compressors they do go over 0db into positive values cos working with tape you can saturate it fine, but generaly not as far, so like a rack comp like a symetrix goes from say -40 or so thru to +10 ish.. does that help? -

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!
