okay here's a nice trick i discover the other day...some
sounds have a nice 'body' but lack a certain 'snap' in their
attack...you could try a lot of thing like compression,
fucking with the AMP-Envellope, micing them together with
other sounds etc. Here's a trick that works particularly
well on bassdrums, snares hats etc.

In sound forge go to the menu where you van draw a pitch
bent curve. Set it up very high at the beginning at a range
of one or two actave and let it come down 80% to the middle
in a few millesecs. Then either let is come down to it's
normal pitch in the nect few millisecs or slowly towards the
end of the sample...very with the timing and range...some
snares and other percussives get a nice snappy sound of
this

cool thought - cos in effect you are emphasising what happens when a drum is hit - it does increase in pitch as the skin tightens with pressure from the stick/hand, but it's to fast to 'hear'

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!

yep and the sound quickly bouces back to it's
original pitch so it's even usable on basses etc

Actually that's where I got the idea from...but it works great on samples too.

I use that technique regularly. Another trick I like is to add a resonant peak somewhere between 600hz and 2500... it adds a nice charactaristic to the sound.. I usually also add some (very subtle) reverb after processing samples like that (especially when I do the pitch-envelope trick).. it makes it sound much more natural, but don't go overboard.. it shouldn't be very noticeable.. just enough to add a little simulated room ambience.
