hmm.... ok first the snare... use a remo batter head.. one of the quilted thick ones.. tuned up high... you'll get a 70's tite snare sound.. otherwise use the old yellow house duster under the top head trick - you want a highish fat thick 'padded' snare sound
second the room... close micing in sound deadened studio's was the norm, also to get the best sepearation... so that has to be attended to and you'll simply NOT get the sound if there is room abience.
so first... can you acheive those two criteria ?? you need to build something round the kit... THICK padded floor carpet, and some walls or hangings (padded/absorbant) around the kit, plus a top if the ceiling is very reflective.
