The obvious and best solution is a sampler and a nice old delay unit and an overdrive pedal.

It's more difficult to come up with interesting rythms with completely clean drum sounds, try reducing the sample rate to dirty them up a bit or reduce them to 12 bit samples.

Oh and a compressor is essential for a good groove IMO

here's some of a Ghana Tribal riddim... as i was taught it it was supposed to be a war riddim.... it is in 3 time... there are other parts to it which play an 'call & answer' with aggogo/bells, i'll add that if your interested...
