Ok, Im trying to make a trance song at the moment, I have done the beat and have a few pads etc. The only problem is I dont know much about keys (ya know the cool ones which sort of sound like an organ like in Gatecrasher -discotech). Could somebody please tell me where I could find a few samples or maybe even software to produce these sounds!

Many thanks

You need to know a little about chords and arpeggios and stuff I think...there's a book I had once called 1000 Keyboard Tips and Tricks or something very similar to that, it doesn't talk about trance but the stuff on chord relationships is very good.

Sounds like you are looking to make anthem trance, most of it is just "that trance organ" that any rompler can make playing an arp'd chord with a cheesy progression. dunno if that helps.

I understand where your coming from man! Get your hands on a Nova and just listen to the thing do its stuff - you don't have to be a musical wizard i.e. DJ Jean

This music is harder to make than people want to admit. It's easy to say it's just a bit of this and touch of that, but without an artist behind the music and inpiration that comes from imagination it'll sound like a midi demo. >To get started you should play with making chords that you think sound nice. Put your fingers on three notes anywhere on the kybrd until it sounds good. Then count the intervals between them, i.e. the number of keys, and transpose the chord to a new position. Maybe even alter the intervals a bit in your new chord position until it sounds good and continue like that, but always keeping it simple to begin with, because adding stuff will make it seem more complex.> Then, sequence the chords in 16th's (staccatto pads!) I hope this is helpful to you and not too basic.

agreed.. it aint just easy... that 'theatre-organ' type sound can be coaxed from alot of synths tho... the cheapest synth that has it as a preset, (although it'll need some eq and mangling with a reverb & maybe some fast panned delay/chorus to get it to sound 'finer') would be an old DX yamaha synth... they all have a theatre-organ preset... lots of fast lfo pitch modulation is the key so fast that the sound 'warbles' almost imperceptibly... plus maybe a tad of fast lfo mod on the filter to (but not to deep) - and you can try banging UP the MOD wheel to full too... basically it's an impression of an old wurlitzer organ type keyboard

anyways... on the original underground street-level tracks that started to use that sound years ago before it got commecialised that is the synth that gets it instantly - dx100, dx7, dx9/27 tx81z etc... if the server wasn't falling over i'd post an example in audio format... (you ARE talking about THAT organ sound like on say Sunscream's Gatecrasher track, exodus??)

yes exactly (awesome track), If possible could you recommend a site that has samples of 'that trance organ?'. Also Do you know how to make that kind of sound with orangator 2.0? or prehaps other free internet software. I have a sequencer (making waves new version)- dont laugh its all I can afford. Is it easier to purchase a budget keyboard when I put the sample into a sequence?or is the software ok?

well why not get a dx.. they are under 100 - cheap you can sequence riff's on it with a s/w like seq-303 etc... then tape 'em and use the loops in MWaves, but alot of the sound you're after is in the mixing of the sound, eq etc

Hope this is on topic - I've been told that 90% of
writing trance is production work. Trance may be the
most heavily produced of all the electornic genres.
It's a long way from decks, effects and 909   Trance
producers also can't just ride a beat for 32 bars
tweaking the hihats.

Choice of instrumentation is also key. Those interested
should check out the last few posts in 'music as
language' in Music Theory... I try to explain why we
all can benefit from using the same sounds.

The best way to get good trance keys is to look at other songs...
Try Binary Finary's 1999
Here are the notes
Left Hand:
C,D,Eb,F,G
Right Hand:
C,F,G,A,Bb
This is pretty simple but you can mess around with it quite alot to make something completley different
Try it out...
Oh yeah and instrumentation is everything

  • It's a long way from decks, effects and 909

I had a listen to this album carefully to maybe pick up some tips about production - I've come to the conclusion that there is something going on to make it all sound like this... don't know what ritchie hawtin is doing but every track has the same production on it... sort of squeezed effect.. like really over compressing then over enhancing it or something..

I wouldn't use it as a reference for producing techno anyway.

trance if anything is just cleaner sounds, but the production isn't any better than techno.. IMO from experience with trance artists with stuff out..

personally I think trance is easier to engineer than techno.

    sorry to but in.

thing about trance is that the production is very same-y across the board, but techno varies more between artists/tracks. techno has more room for experimentation in production where as trance is generally going for a particular vibe/feel.

    but i don't know shit :-)

I just don't understand why anyone would like this stuff. But anyway it's not my place to judge.I think you are looking for that copression technique used by adrian sherwood on his dub tracks. If it's kind of a push pull sort of feel that is called pumping.don't use it on the bass freqs.just turn up the ratio reduce the threshold I think it's a fast attack and slow release. It's been a while since I've used this trick so I'm not sure.
