is there a free VST-format distortion plug-in anywhere?

fuzzbox in VST just don't cut it, but the sound is close to what I want...
I'm looking to shred analog bass sounds for d&b....

look for a demo of Steinberg's QuadraFuzz, it might be what your looking for... its not freeware though..
