ive heard this effect in several dub tracks and wonder how its done and what kind of machines that produce it:
Its some kind of delay with pretty much feedback and it sounds as if the echoes are put trough some kind of HPF filter that gradually cuts more and more frequencies. Is this understandable? If so, please help.

Those were done with various types of analog delays, where the repeats would degrade in quality. So yeah, you could go find a vintage box. TC Electronics D-Two has a LOW-PASS FILTER (HPF would cut low frequencies and let the highs pass) you can insert in the feedback loop to simulate this sort of sound. Line 6 has a stomp box they call a Delay Modeler with simulations of various Echoplexes and Space Delays with the added benefit of being able to tap the tempo in.

Im quite new to the technical side of dub and would like to learn more. For example, the analog delay units you mentioned, how do they work (i already know the basic principles of the tape delay), how much do the vintage units cost today etc. Do you know any analog delay units with HPF filters or is the HPF-like sound created when the sound quality degrades with each new echo? And what is Echoplex and Space Delay?

sorry for not knowing anything and thanks for the info

that's tape delay sound that decaying top end effect.... the classic dub delay - roland space-echo type sound... space-echo was the name of the unit by roland, it's in the fx section i think. hard to find items that hold their value due to their sought-after status - analog delays have a more metallic ringing sound, hard to describe, but what you hear on the old 70's plates is usually tape delay... basically for the man above they have a bunch of playback heads after a record head, and you can speed up or slow down the tape loop to make the delay speed change...

The Echoplexes moved the playback head to vary delay time. There were both tube and solid state models. The roland works like k said.

Line 6 has a PDF manual for their new box on their web site that describes the workings of the classic echo boxes they modeled.

kef: It's not HPF. A High Pass Filter lets the highs pass. High Pass Filters cut bass.

All these analog units, be they tape-based or bucket-brigade-based achieve that sound because the sound quality degrades on each subsequent pass through the feedback loop. It wasn't until digital delays showed up that anyone expected the repeats to be as sharp as the original. The newer boxes that try to replicate this sound do it with filters.

Search out the DUB ME CRAZY HOMEPAGE and you shall find an excellent dub tutorial. And you must get a space echo and not an echoplex the roland space echo RE-201 has spring reverb which is an important part of the Lee Perry/King Tubby original dubs.Leave the tape in for years and no fx box can do that.
