Is the Q20 good at making bizarre effects or is it more of a Pop module?
How does it compare to the Fireworx?

i've heard the korg am8000r compared to a "poor man's fireworx",
also the zoom 1204 (even poorer man's fireworx
i've never heard the same said about anything alesis.
i don't know how similar the midiverb IV is to the Q20,
but i think it is similar to the Q2. that's the one I've used
(the midiverb IV), basic and pretty boring. not awful but
not wonderful either (i preferred my old lexicon reflex over
it for reverb, and neither had a large variety of stuff).

the se-50/se-70 are good for bizarre effects (se-70 better),
the korg a1/2/3 have a few strange effects (multi-tap
chorus? dynamic flange/chorus?) the am8000r is a
more modern version of the a-series. the 1204 by
zoom supposedly has a lot of strange fx (it has a vocoder)
for real cheap. the new boss vf-1 might be a contender,
looks like a second-generation se-70. then there's always
the lexicon vortex....

nomad is right, i have a dl8000r ..a great tool for sound design i must say...teh q20 also is very flexable with up to 8 fx going on ( max)patch cords and stuff but am8000r comes much closer to the fireworx in my opinion with a eq and 3 fx blocks

Hmm I'm looking at getting a VF-1, do you know if it can sync to MIDI for delays or any other appropriate effects?

Well I just got a VF-1. It DOES sync to MIDI. So far I'd have to say its awesome, but then again I've only had it an hour or so, but I definitely see it as a wise purchase. I got it for $350 which isn't too bad considering zzounds sells it for like $360.
