OK, so my CD player is digitially connected to my sampler, whilst the sampler is digitially connected to the mixer, but when i try to sample from the cd, the mixer always resets the digital connections so that the sampler isn't connected to the mixer and i can't hear the output. if you see what i mean. This doesn't happen if the sampler is not digitally connected to the mixer... A mate of mine suggested that i might have an option on the sampler to turn off monitoring when sampling but i can't find it (the sampler is an SU700)... anyone had a similar problem / got an idea how to fix it...????
thanx....

Which device is the word-clock master? Perhaps the CD player only has the ability to act as a word-clock master not as a slave so the sampler and mixer must be set to slave to it. Just a thought.

I had the same thought... But wouldn't
the digital I/O simply not function
without a word clock sync?

er - not sure. whats a word clock master? and if this is the problem, is there anyway round it? cos the only way i can get samples in from the CD player currently is thru an audio connection, unless i disconnect the digi out from the sampler then put my headphones into the sampler, that might work... but i'd rather not have to do all that...

Digital signals have to be synchronized,
and this is done using a mechanism
called "word clock". One device is the
master, and all other devices must sync
to it. It's possible (probable) you
have this set up wrong. CD players,
being consumer devices, probably must be
word clock master. So you'll have to
set everything to sync to the CD
player's word clock. See the thing is,
I don't think you can do it with just 1
pair of S/PDIF ports on each piece of
equipment.

I don't use much in the way of digital
S/PDIF I/O so I can't really say. My
01V is directly hooked to my Emu Darwin
and that's the end of it.

99devils: the digital connection to the 01V could become inoperative when the CD player tries to assert itself as word-clock master. Which would mean you couldn't monitor the sampler obviously.

Harold: Read Chapter 16 in the 01V manual especially pp206 to pp210. It explains all about word-clocks and how to connect equipment digitally.

Well, I have an 01V as well. If the
word clocks are set wrong it will
complain noticeably. This chap didn't
let us know what kind of mixer he's
running, so we don't know really do we

Honestly, are you really going to be
able to tell the difference in the mix
if the sound was taken of the CD over
analog or digital? Why don't you use
your PC to rip it off the CD to a wav
file and export it to your sampler? Why
go through the pain in the ass?

Yup, don't be too concerned about
squeezing every last bit of fidelity out
of something... Just make music
