all i can say is this... get your drums rocking with the bassline and forget EVERYTHING YOU EVER LEARNED OR HEARD about eq' frequencies etc etc.. DUMP ALL THAT STUFF... now.. listen to the drums & bassline... make them dance together... remember.. FORGET the rest.. if they aint dancing together you'll just be polishing a turd if you go further

I've allways thought that kick should be "under" bassline... But when i've been inspecting commercial stuff (digweed lately) i noticed that bassline seems to be in lower frequencies than kick? Am i just a stupid or does my monitor's lack low end (so there is something in 20-38 which i cant hear).

and ... i'm not begging for paybacks but could you tell me what you think about mixing/mastering on my track on that link? ("kiwi milk")
I noticed that it should watch not to overuse my vitaliser... ears just settle to it easily.

That's too much focus on the beats, no? I mean, beats are important, but I like my melodies, too.

I just recorded a track, with VERY HEAVY bass, and the bass slips right under the kicks. The kick punches, and drops, and thuds and stuff, but the bass is really tight, and thick. The key to making work is ALWAYS LEAVING HEADROOM. You can can always normalize after, but to really get your bass to work, you just have to leave room for it in the mix. The track doesn't sound super loud, but all of the instuments are low noise, and you just crank up the output, using that head room, and all of a sudden, it sings. Can't wait to encode this thing into mp3 for you fools.

It'a all about the sounds dancing together.

DZ, do you want to build your house on sand or rock? As far as kick over or under bass, it just depends. Use your ears.

I'm not arguing the merits of a good rhythm section - but building from the kik isn't always the sound I'm looking for, yanowhutahmsayin'?

I usually build fromt the bass(base), but it just depends on the track.

well, to me it's like sambe or other dance-for-three-days music.. drums/beats everything else is incidental, and people dance in the drop-downs in the EXPECTANCY of the drums arriving again..

This is so, but you don't always need drums to create a beat or more importantly; a groove. However they certainly help.

You can easily build a groove with sounds that are not drums. Try the first track off of FSOL ISDN. Plenty like that, or Autechre, or loads of other stuff not using drum sounds to build a groove... Come on dude.
