hi, this question must have been asked a gazillion times but i'm ready here and now.

i'd been eyeing a mackie 1604 vlz pro as my next logical upgrade. the sound quality is quite superb and far excels what i have now (studiomaster 16:2).

in the meantime however, i've noticed that alot of people here have digital mixers. i've always been told (mackie seminar) that analogue has a warmer sound.

now the newer generation is about i wondered what's new. hi-price digital mixers are now more affordable so should i indulge.

i'm not in a position to audition every mixer available (no stores nearby) but a recommendation would be good.

i have an akai s5000, supernova, vintage keys, R8, JX10 and effects units. i need inputs more than anything but cost is a factor.

whats the pros and cons?

thanx for unbiased advice

ciao

fink

i'll keep it simple - you haven't LIVED until you've mixed on an 01V (or 03D, 02R).

If this site ever implemented signatures, mine would run something like that.

Yes, you will too. It's mostly about convenience, for me, but the sound is also fantastic. Very clean, and deathly quiet.

Did anyone ever notice that the people who talk about analog being warmer or better than digital usually use stuff like Neve, SSL... Of course it's going to sound fantastic it's a hundred thousand dollar fucking console! There's really no comparison though between a mid-range Mackie desk and something like an 01V though.

are there any other digital desks to pick from or is the 01v the ONLY choice.

does anyone disagree that the 01v is the be all and end all??

I've heard complaints of build quality on the Promix 01, and also that the compressors aren't as good, but I've never demo'd one. The Tascam TM-D1000 looks nice too and for a lot less money, but it doesn't have the processing power of the 01V, and it's only 8 channels unless you have TDIF outs on your gear. Otherwise, the TDIF adapter plus mixer to give you a 16 analog in desk is about $950 US, so your extra money goes well spent.

the promix 01 only has 3 compressors, crunchy sound and extremely limited i/o. best avoided really.

There are 16 'normal' analog inputs.

There is only room for one expansion board, so if you want digital I/O don't order the analog input expansion board.

no way man. low overhead. dont drink that much anymore. no drug habits. no girlfriend. great driving record so insurance is cheap. minor credit bills.

as for the Inputs on the O1v. 16, but 12 mono 2 stereo.

8 in analog card is about $220 or so?

And..uh..."if you want digital IO"???? uh..its GOT spdif IO. if you want ADAT IO you need the adat card and yeah, it only takes one card, so

Yeah, influx, that's what I meant.

I bought the adat expansion to connect the 01v to my computer for multitrack recording and playback.

I'll use the spdif in to hook up the K2000RS if possible.

if you want to record fader movements manually in realtime, not via midi through the sequencer, am i right in thinking this machine can't do it.

was the promix 1 able to do this??

if the 01v can't do this, what can - only high end machines??

I don't think it's possible to record fader movements in realtime.

However, it is possible to set a fade time (up to 25 seconds) to fade from one scene to another. This fade probably includes gradually moving faders towards the new scene's fader positions.

"...record fader movements in realtime"
should be
"record fader movements in realtime without an external sequencer"

the old 01 didn't have an onboard mix sequencer either - you had to use an external sequencer to record and play back fader moves with that too. The 03D and 02R *do* have built-in mix sequencers though...

and about linking several 01Vs - I like how all you need to do is buy a couple of cables to do this. The 'Cascade' kits for the 03D/02R cost about £800 :-)

Yeah, I like the idea of cascading 01Vs, too. I'm considering buying another one so that I can use more channels for each synth.

(I'm trying to figure out something about the TR-909 that is somehow related to spending more money to get more inputs. The 909 has a stereo out, but the individiual outs are mono ? Doesn't seem to make much sense...)

Sure it does, as you will be able to pan the individual outs using your mixer

Yes, but what's the deal with the 909 stereo out ? If the individual outs from the 909 are mono, and there is no pan control or anything else to indicate that signals are stereo... Is the stereo out just two identical mono outs ?
The reason I'm obsessing with this is that I want to be sure I'm not losing anything by using the individual (mono) outs...

I don't know all that much about the 909. Try asking in the analog forum, or to get the answer from some real analog-crazies, try the Analog Heaven listserv.

usually a stereo out is just a sum of all the sounds with a left and right. mono out means the sound will be mono...like a kick snare etc. you wont lose anything like that...itll sound solid cuz you can seperate the sounds out. try it!
