that is cos the 15/16 is routing back into the soundcard somehow making a loop - 'howl-round' is what you are experiencing

Why not use the 2TR in. That's what it's there for. You can route it to 15/16 in if you really want that kind of control over it.

Because 2TR In is for return a two track input (e.g. the DAT you're recording to) and routing it through the mixer so you can hear the actual recorded mix through your monitors.

You can't use it as a mix channel.

mike is right... the 2TR input bypasses the rest of the mixer, it simply provides a L/R input routed back out to the monitor feed-amp-speakers ..... it is fine to add your s-card outputs to a mix of outboard... that is the way to work for getting pc audio into your outboard mix... but as i say, when you push it too far you're getting a loop... the sund is getting IN from the pc, down the channels 15/16, and somehow is routing out to the pc soundcard input again...

but if it ISN'T routed thru, then all i can suggest (not being a sparky), is that there is some other form of electrical earth-loop feeb back perhaps....

what i want to know is how is the mixer routed BACK TO THE PC SOUNDCARD... how is that happening?

he said the sound card was connected to the 2 tracks.
probably 2 trk out -> soundcard -> 2trk in.
if you then put the soundcard -> 15& 16 instead,
15& 16 -> 2 trk out and there's your loop.

solution?
1-remove 15&16 from the main output while recording.
(solo them to hear the soundcard. or turn monitoring
(in->out loop) in the soundcard off.
2-mute the recording inputs on the soundcard
when just playing sounds.

that should work....
