Is there a difference between compressing a track with outboard gear or is it just as good compressing afterwards. (especially vocals and bass)

Depends on the compressor your use. If you get your settings right and are using good software then there will in theory be no difference, but hearing in realtime is pretty essential in getting the right sound.
