RE: PC vs. MAC using VST or VST24
I run a powerbook 3400 with a 200Mhz 603e processor, 32M
RAM (which needs upgrading to 64) and a 2G Hard disc. The
disc capacity is fine, but the CPU can't handle more than
about 3 effects loaded up at once - this is more of an
issue than the number of tracks itself actually.
I would suggest for 16 tracks and loads of fx you would
need a 233Mhz G3 machine (266 if poss) - desktop Macs are
more specced up in terms of cache sizes - I bought my
laptop for portabilitys sake, so traded off a bit of
performance.
Macs have 32bit sound capability built in, but as for
analog in/outs this would require a card - I don't know
much about them. CD burning dunno, midi card not needed,
just a copy of Opcode's OMS (free from their web site) and
an interface which plugs into the modem port - trouble is
it's all changing now iMacs are here - they have USB ports
so quite what kit is available for them yet I couldn't
tell you. Interfaces by opcode or Altech are meant to be
OK.
Hope I've been of some use - I don't know the world about
complex studio setups, my laptop is just for home use, but
I do know alot about Macs if you nee
