RE: Emax vs Akai S20 or S2000?
The emax doesn't have as much sample time, or as many upgrade options, or much support anymore. But, if I had to make a choice on sound "quality" I'd choose the emax over the s2000 any day (I had both, and I hated the s2000).
Pros:
s2000- support, upgrades, sample time, mass storage upgrade
emax- interesting synthesis section, nice filters, built in 8 outs, ease of use, keyboard attatched
Cons:
s2000- sounds as thin as paper, filters are better left unused, upgrades cost a lot (and aren't very useful)
emax-no upgrades, little support, hard to find mass-storage, limited sample time (though more than you would expect, since it is mono @ 12bit), limited polyphony
It really depends, I found the emax to be very intuitive, and in a lot more powerful than the s2000, the s2000 on the other hand can only record and play a sample back (you can trim, add LFOs etc, but it just plain doesn't sound good)...
