Is it possible to burn or any other way do harm to your soundcard by sending too powerful or distorted signals to its input?

I like to sample all kinds of distorted shit using heavy volumes but now I'm afraid of my soundcards wellbeing...

If the signal is

way

too hot then you could bugger the input stage electronics. Probably need to be pretty hot tho'

record the signal lower.... then do a normalise on it after it is recorded....
