Is the DB50XG compatible with the AWE64 GOLD,
and if so, what does everybody think of this
set-up?

Any better sugestions within this price range?

yes it works with the sb since it has a "waveblaster" type connector.

this setup maybe ok if you do not plan to go deep into digital audio recording, dunno but i don't trust creative... when you really need a pro feature it always lacks something. if you are going to do only some midi sequences that's ok 'cus you're going to use basically the yamaha. I suggest you a yamaha sw60xg (db50 already included in this one) or pinnacle project studio. If you are going to do mods go for the terratec ews64xl i heard it is very good

Nope.

The AWE 64 gold does not have a waveblaster connector.
Creative probably thought they were so good that there was no need
for daughter boards. :-(
