Looking for that eighties punch in my drums. Gating my snares helps but they're still not quite a crisp as I would like.

And my kicks aren't happening at all. In fact they sound quite dull. Instead of a nice warm 'wump' I get a dull 'thud'.

How did those eighties producers get such slamming beats?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Well, I just read an interview with BT in Remiz magazine, and while I'm not exactly his biggest fan, I was kind of impressed with his technical and musical knowledge...Didn't expect it to be quite honest. Anyway, one thing he does to give his drum samples more punch (he does this when cutting up a groove and time adjusting) is to cut a little bit of the attack off at the beginning of the hit, not on a zero crossing. This creates a high frequency pop, which can be tamed a bit using a filter or envelope or something...

Hope that helps

and the award for the ugliest drumbox ever created goes to......

I read somewhere that applying an exciter to the first few samples on a drumsound gives it more impact also. Works sometimes too.

or a fast pitch sweep from very hi to it's normal pitch in a few ms... Doesn't everybody cut of those first few samples? I allways thought that was the only way to do it...
