New at this technodance thang...

I really for the life of me can't figure out the difference between techno styles?

Maybe it's my ear (I remember the first time I heard "Bitches Brew" it just sounded like noise), but I can't get the difference between House, Techno, Hard Trance, Jungle, you name it.

Not that they all sound the same, I can hear differences, just can't put my finger on it.

Okay, first we will start off with the basics. House, trance, gabber, hard house, garage all have the same beat structure and that is 4/4. Boom Boom Boom Boom. The sounds it may have are different but the beat will always be based on 4/4.

Breakbeats go a bit different. The beat structure is exactly what it says Broken beats. Boom Cha Boom boom Cha boom cha boom...etc. The normal breakbeat music is clocked at about 130 bpms and it is pretty recognizable by the "Break it down" or "Get Fresh" and other cliche samples.

Drum n Bass is a form of breakbeat that EVOLVED (that word being the BEST way to describe dnb) It is breakbeats but sped up to about 160 bpms with the basslines going about 80 bpms. Now the distinct sound of drum n bass (or otherwise called jungle: and no there is no difference) is the snare. A good snare can make any drum n bass song in my opinion. Then you got the sounds on top which makes the difference.

The three basic electronic MAIN genre's are HOUSE, BREAKBEAT, and DRUM N BASS. Now there is downtempo, atmospheric, and a lot of other experimental styles. The hard part is pointing out the main SUBGENRES of the main genres. Quick breakdown of drum n bass genres:

Atmospheric- Exactly how it sounds.
Tech-step-Very techno influenced dnb with lots of analog sounds stretched out. Basically sounds like a video game getting mad at you but I love the shit and a lot of people do to.
Hard-step- Harder drum n bass with a distorted sound about it.
Jump-up - Very bouncy basslines and catchy samples on top. Aphrodite is very predominate with this style even though it sucks!

Those are just the main ones right now but there is like 15 different sub-genres of drum n bass.

You just got to listen and take these guidelines to your ears.

ahh, search for a website called 'the electronica primer' or somthing like that, it tells about the genres and some sub genres, and has audio examples for some of them.

If you do any drum programming you'll
note that in DnB and BreakBeats, the Snare
usually stays on Beats 2 and 4, but
not always.

With House, I think its a Closed HiHat on the 2nd
and 4th beat, with a Bass Drum on all 4 beats.
