anyone here have problems focussing on certain styles of music?? i am going out of my mind as i honestly find it impossible to concentrate on one style of music anymore! i understand the need to be open-minded in relation to both listening and writing music, but i am so inspired and impressed by so many types of music, that i don't seem to be able to write that much anymore....i'll listen to a progressive house/trance set and think 'that's it, that's the level you want to be at'.....2 days later i'll hear some evil down-beat breaks track, think the same, a day later listen to radiohead or puressence and want to sack the whole dance thing....get on the guitar, mess around with samples, etc. as much as i like having the open-minded approach, at the moment i just seem to be noodling around with a million and one unfished bits of everything, and getting nowhere fast. i remember when i was a FULL ON JUNGLE HEADCASE for years, i got tracks written.....i was to a point, quite single-minded (as far as dance music went, anyway) but this at least gave me a starting point and something to aim for. i know you will probably all cry 'if it feels right, just do it!' but the thing is, people need to identify with a certain style of an artist, and then usually this is followed later by their (the artists) other influences finally showing up - the prodigy are a classic example; did the rave scene for years, got established, started messing around with stuff in other directions, ended up writing jilted generation!! and then punk, and now apparently hip-hop and d'n'b influences are back for the new album!! my point is that at one point, liam howlett was comitted to one specific style enough to succeed at it, and was then able to move on.....fair enough if you want to write for tv, or are just so damn brilliant that even though your demo ranges from speed-metal to gospel to chill-out jazz to minimal industrial techno, you still get signed to emi!!! but a lot of labels probably have one, two or in rare cases three styles of music they want to hear......what do you do, sod it and write anything and everything, or set yourself some realistic goals to achieve, ie, do so many tracks in one pigeon-hole and get them sent off??? whatever i am curreently writing, the music on the radio/someones car stereo/in the club i'm at will always be what i think i should be doing instead!!!! help me, please. maff!! p.s. what are your opinions on doing tracks in a style you dislike, just because it's so formulaic and easy, to get some money?? i at one time thought 'NEVER!' but after finding out that an old school-colleague is now earning £5000 per remix (of which there are loads), it does make you think that perhaps it's time to ditch your morals, along with the shitty factory job, and make some money. maff

oh dude, talking about torn between music styles, lol. I have almost e x a c t l y the same problem, I don't expect a contract right now, though, since I'm just getting started, well third year now, but you know ... no money - no real gear =P.
i make breakbeat, techno, trance, dub (still working on 2 tracks) and I like all those genres (well at least it's the kind of music I can make). I can't decide which one i'd later specialise on .... hehe
oh and when I listen to people younger than me, making better music, my inspiration fades away
but check for yourself, 'd be nice to hear from some professionals =)
thanks
