Weve got a few anamods ( modelers ) in the studio but we were thinking of getting a real analog soon. Ive done some research and there looks like a lot of kool synths out there t o choose from. But the price has to be realistic. I have narrowed it down to a few and was wondering if anyone out there had anything to say about these choices.

Arp Odyssey III
Korg MS-20
Korg Mono Poly
Roland Juno 106
Prophet 5

If scoped them out on ebay for around 400-800

Any feedback would be apreciated

i use a pro-one.. prolly not as much as i should, due to the convenience of digital automation..

i tend to pigeonhole it for thick, deep bass, and fx.. for the fx, one feature is necessary.. being able to fm the cutoff with an oscillator.. (no aliasing, smooth hi freq sounds..) being able to combine/strack the different waveforms is an asset here..

I have only once played around with the MONO/POLY, it's OK I guess but it didn't blow me away... The Yamaha CS10 however is a force to be reckoned with, I'm on the lookout for one of those- cheapo too.

A lot depends on what you want to do with it, well, not a lot, but enuff... My own vote would be the Juno106 (specially since I've seen 'em around $300 here and there) or the Prophet 5. But really, any of em should be a nice addition.

yeah... the ms-2o has my main vote so far, I like the idea of real patches using cable, but I would need the SQ-10 as well since its not midi. I dont fancy playing 16th note arpeggios by hand, and in time at 147bpm. My dream machine is a roland 700 and an Arp 2600. But I dont got the dough.

As for the roland 106, it is cheap and good i hear, its my second choice...plus midi too. just have to wait and see.

I don't know what you fools are thinking. Of that list, it is without a doubt the Prophet 5. That thing (rev3) comes stock already midi controllable, and has 5 times the oscillators that the ms-20 has. The MS-20 IS dope to be sure, but its just not the prophet 5. The versatility of that machine for pads, polyphonic analog, and just dope sounds is incomparable. I say this as a choice in the list. However, you din't mention any moog stuff. Why? What are you thinking? An ARP 2600? No way, go moog. Just put patch points into a Prodigy and get ill. You'l spend less then on an ARP, and then you get really sick, and buy a couple MOTM modules to go with the patched prodigy, and you're siting on a powerhouse for less than a grand and real MOOG sound. You want analog? That's one way I might recommend. Cheaper, more versatile, and better sound. You'll need to get a good controller, too. Kenton does pretty nice ones. My two cents.....
