roland digital filters are pathetic. Get a Virus. Very versitle and dynamic with plenty of fx, arpegios, and realtime control with ample voices to do complex music.

well...any casio "___tone" will work as well. Or perhaps a nice yamaha (Ive seen some REALLY cool ones for under $300 at guitar center. Theyre so damn hot they have their own wall even!)

i think the emax (budget) and k2000 (more budget) - cos both'll do really good sweeps & filters and imitate analogs, but both'll do sample playback for other custom sounds so important to techno - I think techno is more about sample sounds & hits & custom drums & noises now than analog or analog-style synthesis, but you still need some of that too and both synths'll do decent analog-ish sounds. Mebbe add a small VA too. Yamaha a3000 sampler also does decent synth-line sounds with it's built in waves (or samples) but the waves are ready to go in onboard rom, although of course it isnt a proper synth, but close enuff like the e-max.

oh my. How dull, played out, overused, and abused. How many 909/303 tracks have been made? And how many didn't sound just as tired, weak, going nowhere as the last thousand? Budget tools for people who can't use the good shit. There is no best, however, I'm playing with an Oscar right now, and that thing seems to be pretty cool.
