Cleveland was born in Nashville, Tennessee and played clarinet in junior and high school. After graduation, he attended Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee earning B. S. and M. S. Degrees in Sociology and Counseling. Cleveland didn't play any music during this time because he was employed full-time supporting himself and paying his way through college. But now , it's time to let the music play.
