Decks & Studio

DJ Fulla-D

Background:

Amiga Amigo.

Started making music at the age of 14 when I first got an Amiga 500 computer. Back then I was into Hardcore just as the Jungle scene started to emerge. I managed to compose simple 4 track 8-bit tunes on Med (Music Tracker Program), using a basic set of samples and ½ a meg of Ram!
I remember the best sample I had at the time was the funky drummer break and then a year or so later I managed to get hold of the mighty Amen break.
Even though the sound quality was poor, being 8-Bit, the Amiga was very easy to use and I still think it was the best tool to be creative with.
A few years later I upgraded to an Amiga 1200 with hard drive, 12-Bit sound card and a processor accelerator with 4 megs.

Studio.

I got my first chance to work in a studio doing various tasks (including the tea duty) when I was 20. This was a project studio, nothing glamorous but it had a few bits of equipment I wanted to learn about. I worked on an off at this studio for about 10 years, and I have to say I gained a hell of a lot of experience work there.
The guy that owed the studio (Ren) was a producer and had worked with Shy Fx,
Bizzy B and Micky Finn to name a few. So I was in the right place at that time to learn some new tricks. I ended up assistant engineer before I left to become a tutor.

First Dub-Plate

I remember getting my first dub cut when I was 19. I used to go to a youth club where I first learned how to DJ (see DJing section) and they put on a music production course for us. Dam it was basic, an old time IBM computer running a program called Voyettra or something, an Akai 500 sampler and a Midi Verb fx unit. There were 7 of us on the course and by the end of the it there were 3. I took it serious and ended up making the tune almost by myself. When it was finished after 4 sessions we went up to JTS in Hackney to get it cut. What a buzz that was, walking out on street with my first record stinking of acetate in the classic nice 10” yellow record cover.
That was 12 years ago and since then I’ve managed to get 1 cut every other year or so down at Transition in Forest Hill.

DJ’ing.

I got into DJ’ing at the age of 18. Me and me mate got a pair of Sound Lab belt drive decks and a bag of tunes, but we were rubbish at tying to mix on them! It wasn’t until we found a local youth club a few months later with a set of 1210’s that we got a bit better. Me and my sidekick Ace would be there practically every evening beat clashing to our hearts were content. We even managed to blag getting in during the day just to practice.
When I was 21 I got myself a brand new set of 1210’s and developed my style and ability from that point on.
I used to play at all the local party’s and even managed to play a couple of clubs. It used to scare the shit out of me playing in clubs, the nerves was something I look back on giggle to myself. Sometimes it would be so bad that I couldn’t put the needle at the start of a record. My hand would shake so bad I had to just literally threw the needle onto the record and rewind it back to the start. Glad I don’t suffer like that anymore, well not quite as bad as that anyway!
Moving forward, I still DJ but haven’t done a gig for a couple of years now. I mainly play at friends party’s and at home in the studio making mix CD’s.

Production Wise.

As I’ve been making, or should I say trying to make tunes for nearly 18 years you would have thought I would have an impressive collection of music, but I have steadily spent all this time just playing around and learning new tricks and developing my overall sound.
At present all my productions are done on a laptop using FL studio 6 and WaveLab5.
For me FL studio has everything I need to produce my tracks and love working with it!
To be continued!!!!
