Sometimes the city is not as it seems and yet, other times, the city is exactly what you want it to be. Only this is true, the city is always heaving, always seething, always changing, always moving, always becoming – the Metropolis.

The Nohno project, created by Dean Dennis, is a quest to embrace the new, the pursuit of many horizons. In composing “Metropolis”, Dennis, with additional sound and sample design by his collaborator Jose, has created a soundtrack for the heroes and heroines of the inner-city.

Dense ambient layers drift, ghostly piano riffs shudder, squelching acid synths peruse. It is as if it is the postmodern melody to Fritz Lang’s 1927 epic film Metropolis. Dennis’ “Metropolis” is like dancing to architecture.

Raised in Sheffield on a high-dose of jazz funk, Dean Dennis took a good look at Bootsy Collins and saw the light. Joining Clock DVA, Dennis journeyed around Europe and North America, bringing Clock DVA’s inimitable sound with him. After five albums and a side-project called The Anti Group, Dennis went his own way and began his darker dance floor pursuit of Sector.

After three albums as Sector creating writhing deep techno Dennis was ready to stretch out into new territories. In describing his Nohno project, Dennis said – “What I listen to is very varied and I felt I wanted to reflect more of my influences. The main change of direction with the Nohno project is that it has many directions. Sector was restricted in a way to a dance-orientated format. Nohno is more open. Musically I’m setting myself new challenges, looking at different styles and also opening up to working with different artists and different art forms.”

Metropolis is the first course on the menu for Out to Lunch Recordings, which in their words, is “A mixed grill of Electro, Retro, Ambience with a dash of hot pepper sauce. Cooked up for your listening delight by head chef Dean Dennis.”
