The chamber was filled with strange noises. Guttural fragments of vocalisation combined with the electronic buzz of a crudely fashioned technology. And there, in the corner, lines of immense vats filled with yellow and grey and green, fleshy things squished against the crusty glass, streams of quicksilver dripping from faces and cyborg hands.

...these were sights I could not have expected and would never forget. Through the sulfurous yellow haze I peered at magnificently strange devices. Shining balls of copper and bronze, suspended above licking flames of cobalt...giant astronomical artifacts and slowly turning gantries of dark iron, perhaps charting the progress of distant stars and alien worlds...
