Hi all,

anyone know how to achieve the bass sound squarepusher so loves to use...

It sounds to me like its a sqaure wave as its quite hollow, but with some res for a bit of squelch and filter env for a rounded sound...but no amount of tweaking has got me near the sound- the sound appears on his 'untitled' single and i would love to know how to achieve it- it may well be an FM sound but am not sure.....quality synth tone thou- any ideas?

let us know if you need an audio snippet

Greg

oh, sounds like a pretty standard square wave bass (for the lowend). layered with that seems to be a saw (or even perhaps a square wave with some pulse width on it... not PW modulation, just a fixed duty cycle other than 50/50 for some grit. I like to use extreme settings for square waves) apply all the aforementioned resonant filtering and enveloping to the higher spectrum of the saw/pulse wave and leave the solid square bass untouched to anchor the sound. And of course a good overdrive will truly make it spit. I'm sure SP is using quality analog gear for this purpose... dirty dirty tubes!

hmm, have you tried adding a touch of chorus to a
square wave?

i use basses like that all the time. you can use 2 square
waves, sync them, no PW (or very little), lp filter, cutoff at
half, a little res then add a little chorus to get it even
hollower. you can play with a filter env to get a little
punch for the attack of the notes as well.

K it was just an mp3 at 128kbs- maybe there was a browser issue or a network issue from my end...

DG- good idea- i rarely use chorus on bass so will give that a try- to me the sound definitly sounds achievable with a va - so will have a go with my aj1- i think also there is a velocity sensitivity or its just modulating between notes-

thanks..

nope it was the file type, so I wondered what encoder was chucking out that mime type, I use wavelab and it chucks out a different mime type (but they are all 'mp3 files')

i was at work so was using a bog standard encoder-

i used mp3 workshop to snip the file and it may have reencoded the file at the same time- the original came from Kazza Lite and is just a normal mp3 to my recollection so must have been something that mp3 workshop did to the file...

Cheers

mp3 workshop? does that operate directly on mp3 files without decoding them? i'm looking for a utility like that for someone. so does it?

yeah but its pretty primitive, in that theres no real visual display just a couple of markers you can use to cut segments out with, i think there are conversion options too but only wanted it to cut a ready encoded mp3 so didnt use em...

cool. i'm looking for a tool which can alter the volume of mp3's without decoding. this looks like it might do the job. thanks.
