I hope this is what you mean. If you stay in the key of C major the F you nead for the 7th chord makes that chord a Gmaj flat 7th chord. You can use the F# if you like and see where that takes you. F# is a diminished 5th in relation to C. This interval of a dimished 5th between any 2 notes is also known as a tritone. Tri-tones have that scary quality to them.

I think I was confusing. The diminished chord I posted with the reply was not in answer to your question but I extrapolated a bit.

Add F. That's the natural 7th. Adding F# would make it a Major 7th. Normally you'd use M7s on I and IV. But substitutions are fun. Try screwing around with that second C so it's not the same as the first: a different inversion (drop the G to the bottom so it's GCE), a M7 (CEGB), a 9th (CEGBD), a vi minor 7th (ACEG). Also, you can leave notes out on the more complex chords: Leave out the root and the 5th and you still have a lot of the defining tonalities.

Oops. Yes, the chord is Dominant 7th. I've heard the interval, i.e. a whole step below the octave or the 7th of the mixolydian mode, described as natural as opposed to minor, I guess the reason being to avoid thinking that the 3rd would be minor. It might just be an idiosyncratic description that I've foolishly perpetuated here. Damn, too many syllables in that last sentence.

is the 7th the seventh of the root of the v chord in the C...like is it the 7th note in the scale of whatever the root note is for the v in the scale you are in?

What, the F?

Of the G.

G-B-D-F is a G7 chord

G-B-D-F# is a GM7 chord
