Hello all! It's Jack , back from the dead! My how times change! I was just given a
pc (Gateway desktop model) from my mother in law, which I will place in the
basement of my (yeah - mortgaged in my name!) house, allowing enough space ,
of course, for my 2 year old to run around in.
Anyway this pc has Windows 2000. I'm planning on using Reason, maybe Acid or
Fruity Loops. Basicly pc stuff I've never tried, since I own a Mac. Should I upgrade
to XP?
Thanks!

should work fine on win2000, but since you should do a fresh install anyway, it might be better to upgrade to XP at the same time. not only does XP has new(-er) technology, more updates and support, it is also more configurable to your needs. i think most peeps here would say the same.

OK... I have to ask. Why does everyone suggest the Pro version of XP? I used to suggest it myself simply because everyone else did. But I've since spoken to loads of techy people who say otherwise and, now, as far as I'm aware, when multimedia usage is concerned, there is no difference between Pro and Home. Supposedly Pro just had loads more Networking features etc. (and a price tag 3x that of Home edition).

I'm running Cubase SX3 just fine on home. What is it I'm missing? Besides the chance to give gates another hundred bucks.

oh, no no, it's not the actual difference between the OS's... as you say, 'pro' doesnt bring any extra features of use in the hmoe-studio setup scenario - It's just you dont have any of that 'Authorisation' stuff that goes with XP Home
