what exactly does a modular synthesiser do? example the nord modular etc?

i looked on the internet but could only find programming tips..

is the sound drastically different, or is it just a different layout or something?

thanks~

with a modular, you can design a synthesizer using whatever modules are available (oscillators, lfo's, filters, effects, etc...) to you and route them anyway you want.

in the nords, you have a certain amount of DSP and each module takes a percentage of it. but within that, you can use as many osc's, filters,
and other modules as you want. you can make anything from analogish sounds to FM to drum machines and effect boxes and basically any kind of synthesized sounds you can think of.

wow that's very interesting...so i guess it is harder to program?

is that why on the modular, all the knobs have no function? do you assign it with the keypad thing or something?

its not really that difficult once you get your head around it. you need to have an understanding of synthesis and signal routing to know how the modules relate to one another to program basic patches. it can also get a lot more complex as you learn more about it.

all the knobs on the nord modulars are assigned within the patches to control whatever parameter you want.

i have a micromodular that i got about 6 months ago. my only previous experience with synthesizers was with soft synths and a korg poly800, electribes, etc...

anyway, if you put the time into learning it, it is a lot of fun and very educational.

If you spent 5 hours with a real modular and a pile of patch cables, you would probably learn more about synthesis than a year of web surfing would get you.

Not to say that learning about it by reading isn't good. Sometimes it's all ya got. But you owe it to yourself to find a real breathing modular and go mad for an afternoon or evening.

The only drawback is that you will feel limited with pretty much every non-modular synth you ever use after that

although there is a lot to be said for a well designed synth to work quickly with.

(...longs for virus C but still thrilled with 2 AN200's and 1 DX200)

yes its true. and i love them all.

the sequencers aren't all that, but they really do sound pretty good.

super cheap as well.
