I am trying to figure out how to do those dynamic snare, hi-hat, and kick drum rolls that are so prevalent in trance and techno, especially GOA. They aren't just straight 16th or 32nd rolls, they seem to vary smoothly in velocity and and when done right, have dynamics that make them sound almost like they were played by a live drummer (a la Hallucinogen, Pleiadians etc). What hardware/software/midi technique is used to do that stuff. Anyone know?

There is no magic trick really. It's just a question of having the right snare sound and making it velocity sensitive so that each hit will have slighly different volume, maybe even letting velocity affect the low-pass filter cutoff slightly to make the drum hits sound a bit more realistic. If you have some way of changing the pitch with velocity or with a pitch randomizer you should do that too. Real drums have slight pitch variations for each hit although they are too small to really notice. That's one of the things that make the drums sound human and you can fake it with slight pitch variations.

Increase the velocities differently on alternate notes. If it sounds boring send the whole lot through a phaser or flanger.

passing comment: you often get seriously phased snare rolls in hardhouse that somebodys obviously just sampled and cut just as the phase starts going up.

the as1 VSTi drummachine allows you to add a low-pass filter, sensitive to velocity, its very easy to use and seems to do the job pretty well.

(cut so that sample starts just as the phase starts going up)

Not to further the useage of rolls, but if you're seqing on a comp., set up a tempo ramp (from song temp to double song temp, say) set up 16th, or 32nd or combo, make the roll, and then clip it out move the midi data whereever you want it, then blow the tempo ramp away. That make sense?

on the akais you can set sample play start position to velocity (it's shit on the a3k), double up the samples one left/ one right. now slowly pan the samples from the edge of the stereo two the middle as the velocity increases. what you get is a phase build that ends up right in ya face.

bit dated tho, used that in 95.
